hummus. yes. that's right. garlicky, tangy, ever-so-smooth, with a kick of cayenne hummus. i make a batch and i can't. stop. eating. it. well, i guess i can stop eventually...when the bowl is empty.
having this delicious little secret, it only seems right to share it with my friends so they may enjoy it as much as i do..on a daily, or even hourly, basis. for a while, i tried to keep the recipe a secret so that our guests would be in shock and awe by it at every party...but then i started to feel bad. {sad, pouty face} so here it is...the coveted shawn & katrina's hummus recipe.
gather your ingredients...
- 15 oz can of garbanzo beans
- 3 tbsp tahini paste (if you can't find tahini paste, i have an easy way to make it described at the end)
- 2 tbsp chopped garlic (forgot to put it in the picture)
- 1/4 cup sesame oil
- approx. 1/4 cup lemon juice but you can add more to achieve your desired tang (is that even a word?)
- vegetable or olive oil to thin it out
- salt, black pepper and cayenne to taste
puree and mix the first five ingredients in a food processor. it will be a thick mush. add vegetable/olive oil to thin out the mixture to your desired consistency. add your salt, pepper and cayenne and you are good to go! see...easy peasy, right? and sooo very yummy.
my lunch for today. and yesterday. and tomorrow. and the day after. hi my name is katrina and i'm addicted to hummus. but i'm ok with that and i'm sure the mister appreciates it as well. i'm sure there are worse things out there that i could be addicted to.
and here's how to make tahini paste. first, you need toasted sesame seeds. if you can't find them toasted, buy them raw and toast them in a pan at low heat until just before they turn golden brown. they will continue to brown after you remove them from the pan, so be careful not to burn them or your hummus will taste like burnt sesame. trust me. stick your toasted sesame seeds in the coffee grinder and grind them for as long as it takes to get magic fairy dust. take your sesame seed magic fairy dust and mix it with sesame oil until it forms a paste. voila! you have yourself tahini paste. store in the refrigerator and you're ready for some hummus action at any given moment...like when you wake up at 2:34am, hunting for a snack. i'm sure your husband will love you for running the food processor at that ungodly hour. warning: i am not to be held responsible from any marital problems caused by this recipe.
happy hump day, friends!
